Cause_to_be_similar

Definition:

An Agent causes two or more distinct entities, which may be concrete or abstract objects or types, to be similar or different from each other. The Entities may be concrete or abstract objects or types. Depending on figure/ground relations, the entities may be expressed in two distinct frame elements and constituents, Entity_1 and Entity_2, or jointly as a single frame element and constituent, Entities. The Agent causes changes that may affect the appearance, the physical properties, or other characteristics of the two entities. However, no such Dimension has to be specified explicitly. After the changes caused by the Agent, the Entities may be like each other to a greater or lesser Degree. Rather than specifying the Dimension of difference, a Differentiating_fact may be mentioned.

Notice that, although similarity presupposes the notion of a cognizer who assesses similarity or difference, that cognizer is not part of the Cause_to_be_similar frame.

NOTE: In the following example, the Agent is not actually changing the shape of Entity_1:

La empresa quiere DIFERENCIAR el Rolls Royce de otros vehículos del mismo segmento, poniendo de relieve la potencia de su motor y la calidad de los acabados en su campaña publicitaria.
The Agent of the sentence above is not really changing the shape of Entity_1, but is only causing people to change their perception of Entity_1 without actually changing its shape, etc. This uses of verbs like diferenciar where there is no actual change of the entities involved does not belong to this frame.

FEs:

Core:
Agent [Age]
The Agent FE referes to the sentient being that causes Entity_1 and Entity_2 or Entities to be different.

Differentiating_fact [Diff]
A fact about Entity_1 or the Entities that reveals how Entity_1 ends up being the same or different from other entities. (Note the contrast with 'as to'.)

Entities [Ent]
This FE marks constituents that express the set of objects or types whose similarity or difference is caused by the Agent.

Entity_1 [Ent_1]
When there is an asymmetry, Entity_1 is the entity characterized by its similarity to Entity_2, whose characteristics are assumed to be known. Entity_1 is often an external argument.

Entity_2 [Ent_2]
When the Entities are expressed separately, Entity_2 is the one whose characteristics are assumed to be known; it serves as a basis for establishing characteristics of Entity_1.
Non-Core:

Cause []
An inanimate entity or process that causes the similarity.

Circumstances [Cir]

Degree []
The extent to which entities end up to be similar to each other, in general or with respect to some Dimension(s)

Depictive []
This FE is used for any Depictive phrase describing the state of the Entities

Dimension []
This FE marks constituents which express a property in respect to which the similarity of the entities is assessed.

Manner []
This FE identifies the Manner in which Dimension is similar or different

Particular_iteration [Par]

Place []
The Place is the general area in which similarity occurs or exists

Re_encoding [Re_e]
The FE Re_encoding presents the current frame as an integral part of a larger conceptualization expressed by another frame. The frame expressed by the target typically corresponds to a means action within the frame expressed by the Re_encoding.
A través de l coche, muchas personas tratan de DIFERENCIARSE del resto en una clara demostración de haber alcanzado un determinado status social .

Time []
This FE identifies the Time when the similarity occurs or exists.
